Grantown-on-Spey, Highland, PH26 3JX, Scotland, United Kingdom
A handsome stone built hotel situated on the edge of Grantown-on-Spey within its own grounds. Grantown-on-Spey is an excellent location from which to follow the whisky trail or discover Inverness and Loch Ness.
The Club was formed in 1890 and a nine hole course was laid out by A.C. Brown, a golf professional. In 1911 this was extended to 18 holes to a design by Willie Park, of Musselburgh. In 1921, James Braid was asked to advise on improvements to the course and the changes he recommended were incorporated and remain to the present day. From a humble beginning the clubhouse has also evolved over the years and in 1999 a major extension and refurbishment was carried out to upgrade it to the very best modern standard. The club's most famous son is Bobby Cruickshank. After a distinguished amateur career interrupted by the First World War, Boback, as he was affectionately known locally, headed for the United States in 1921 with his great friend and rival, Tommy Armour. As a professional, he won over twenty tournaments and in 1923 lost to Bobby Jones in an eighteen hole play-off for the US Open when Jones birdied the last. The Cruickshank family presented the Bobby Cruickshank Cup to the club in memory of an outstanding golfer and a gentleman. As part of the centenary celebrations, Arnold Palmer was invited to become an Honorary Member of the club. In recognition of his unique contribution to professional golf worldwide and his friendship with Bobby Cruickshank the club were delighted that he accepted. Situated in the Cairngorms National Park, the course measures 5710 yards, with a par of 70 and Standard Scratch Score of 68. Though not long, it presents a fair challenge for every calibre of golfer. It is naturally split into three distinct sections - Holes 1 to 6 are played over flat parkland, holes 7 to 12 through moderately hilly woodland, whilst holes 13 to 18 reverts to undulating parkland. The "signature" hole of the course is Murdie's View, the 275 yard 9th, a short downhill par 4 with the spectacular backdrop of pine trees and the Cromdale Hills, pictured above. When the heather is in bloom on the Cromdales the view is incomparable. Elsewhere on the course, magnificent views of the Cairngorm range may be observed.Wildlife abounds, and whilst rabbits are kept at bay, roe deer and hare may be seen along with a variety of birds such as peewit, oyster catcher and buzzard. ....
