As well as being one of the great commercial successes of North East Scotland, Baxters today is also one of Scotland's major tourist attractions. When visitors have completed their tour of the factory they make for the Visitor Centre with its shops and restaurants. The centrepiece is a 19th century grocery store, complete with leather-bound ledgers and quill pens, a long mahogany counter, glass jars and bottles, and all the other shopkeeper's accoutrements of bygone age. But this is not merely some quaint reconstruction of things past. Here is the actual frontage, and much of the actual contents, of the shop in which George Baxter started the whole business, back in 1868. Its presence, next door to the factory, serves as a constant reminder of the homely virtues and values upon which the business was founded and still thrives today, four generations later.....
